 Topic: Dirt Floor Foundation Girder Repair
We have a 2 foot crawl space under our house with a dirt floor. There are 3 girders running horizontally, with the middle one completely rotted out. I'm looking to replace that girder.

I've laminated the joists in the center of the house and lifted a square area with 4 concrete block piers; 2 on each side of the middle girder. I plan on installing 2 ply 2x10 treated wood in place of the old 1 ply 2x8 (pretty bad I know).

There are a lot of details that I need to ask about to be sure I proceed correctly from here.

1. Do I need a preservative on the ends of my girders, which will rest on a concrete wall around the perimeter? I'm using pressure treated wood from Lowes.

2. Will wood screws be good enough for holding the girder together, or is it required that I use a glue? If so, what should I use?

3. I have heating ducts near the middle girder. If I were to install some form of insulation to prevent the heat from creating humidity, what should I use? Water gets down there when it rains heavily, and any precautions I can take would be great.

4. Do I need to seal the concrete blocks I use as piers with a sealer? Or can I simply apply pressure from the house on them and they will hold? If I need a sealer, can I apply it onto blocks that are already stacked, or will I need to stack them over again?
