Topic: Renovation of common wall structure

i am looking forward to complete renovation of my house. my house is around 40 years old and the common walls with neighbors had been built with mud and bricks as in old times. now facing the problem of water proofing, as i plan a master bedroom with the common wall, what is the best method to water proof the common wall and build its strength. i have come up with an idea of building a complete concrete wall 75mm thick from the DPC. kindly suggest better options.

Dear Rishv

From the contents send by you it is not clear that water leakage is from your neighbours house or from your roof.

Dear Mr. Gupta

Thank you for your reply

as both our houses are around 40 years old, the common wall doe snot have any proper concreting on the base i.e. DPC. Water proofing is required  to be done from the the base of common wall and in vertical direction of common wall as the neighbors have their kitchen with it.the size of our common wall is app. 80ft with single story construction in mud and bricks and the second story is proper cement & bricks. our new construction has to come upto 45ft. till 1st floor. kindly suggest best possible method for water proofing from the base of structure, and also to strengthen the common wall with waterproofing it too.

my new construction area is completely clear till base ans has to be rebuilt from the first step as a new building.

Dear Rishv

From the contents sent by you I am in view that you are constructing a new potrtion about 45' in length. You should follow all construction procedure including laying horizontal damp proof coat with cement concrete 1;2;4 with two coats of hot bitumen and polythin sheet. For more details about dampness and water proofing you should visit the websitegharexpert.com construction section where in safety a lot of material you will find about dampness and water proofing in dampness sub section.

As you asked about old common wall, then it is necessary to know that your neighbour is also want treatment and he is ready for dismenteling and new construction then after giving both side supports you may construct new wall with DPC. Otherwise do the plaster on the wall and lay KOTA stone under the wall at the place of DPC by making cavity inthe wall in 2 to 4 feet long streches in the full width of the wall with the consent of your neighbor.
