Topic: Vitrified Flooring FloorBase on RCC Slabs

Dear Mr. Gupta- I am very impressed by your responses to various questions people ask you and they are very helpful.

I am Rajesh and constructing the 2nd Floor of my home and need some advise.

I'll give you the details I have so you can give me a simple and best advise...

The 1st Floor roof is 5" thick. Currently the 1st floor roof is open to sky and there is a 2" layer of rakhi+earth in 3:1 ratio and then brick tiles over it and finished with a thin (5mm) cement grouting.

I want to use vitrified tiles (500mmx600mm) for my flooring

My Questions:

#1. What is the best and economical method/process of flooring of my house?
#2. Should I remove the existing rakhi+earth layer so the bare RCC slab is exposed?
#3. What should be the material of the first layer to be laid over the bare RCC slab? Should it be broken bricks? I've heard thekedaars using a word like "Kacha Farsh.." - What is "Kacha Farsh" and is it mandatory for a floor?
#4. Can a vitrified floor be installed directly over the rakhi+earth layer?

Pls advise asap so I can plan my construction and budget well ahead in time.

Thanx in anticipation...

Regards
Rajesh

Dear Rajesh
First you construct the 2nd floor i.e. lay the slab than finish the slab and wall with plaster.
1.   For laying floor on RCC slab, base coat of screed i.e. 40mm to 50 mm thick cement concrete 1;8;16 with brick ballast  should be laid on the cleaned RCC slab than a layer of 20mm to 25 mm thick cement concrete 1;2;4 is laid on the base coat. This layer is called Katcha farsh or  floor..
2. Remove the rakhi earth and use it on the 2nd floor roof. After removing the earth etc than clean the rcc   surface with broom and water.
3 As on item no 1.
4. No , no any type of floor s not  possible on rakhi and earth except brick flooring.
If you spent some time and see the construction section of gharexpert.com than you will be find lot of material of all kind of construction. See the link below.

Dear Mr. Gupta-

Many thanx for your prompt and precise answer. Though I was looking for if there's an alternative method of laying the vitrified tile floor on the rakhi foundation so I can somehow save the trouble of removing all that rakhi+earth.

Thank you very much.

Regards
Rajesh

Dear Rajesh
If you do not want to remove the rakhi and earth than lay the cement concrete 75mm thick 1;8;16 with brick ballast on the compacted bed of rakhi and earth. After that repeat the process as earlier sent to you.
For doing this your chowkat or door level is  to be raised up to new floor level.

Respected Mr. Gupta-

Thank you very much for this suggestion and I will go for it now. It will save me all the trouble & cost of removing those rakhi+earth layers which are very compacted as per my test.

I will now remove the brick tiles (which will bring down the floor level by approx 1.5 inch) and use them as my brick ballast and mix it with concrete mixture of 1:8:16 and I dont mind if I've to raise my floor lever by 2 inches - it's worth it comparable to removing all that rakhi.

Thanks much for the advise and sincerely thank you.

Regards
Rajesh

Dear Rajesh
Lay the tiles with cement mortar 1;3 ratio, care should be taken that the brick ballast laid should not dry, it should be wet. If there are more gaps in the brick ballast than lay 20mm cement concrete 1;2;4 ratio on brick ballast to give proper level to tiles. See the article about tiles and laying method.
