Choosing Plants for your Garden

Gardening plants can refer to flowers, shrubs, herbs, vegetables, fruits, creepers and many more. Plants are characterized into different types based on their shape, size, period of life, their growth pattern etc. There are also plants that are seasonal at different times of the year; some grow in winter, others in spring or summer. Whatever type of plants you decide is your choice. There is variety of gardening plants available to suit your preferences.

Annual Plants: Annual plants are the plants that live for a year. These are known as seasonal flowering plants. Annual plants are grown through seeds.  They grow, give flowers and seeds and then die. Annuals add beauty to the garden design with their colors. They give you the option of changing look of the garden every year. Here are some examples of annual plants Asters, Phlox, Balsam, Cosmos, Marigold, Salvias and Dianthus.

Biennial Plants: Biennial is a plant that live for two years. These are also seasonal flowering plants. Under extreme climatic conditions, a biennial plant may complete its life cycle in very short period of time ( two or three months instead of two years). Here are some examples of biennial plants Foxglove, Canterbury bells, Dianthus Barbatus (Sweet William).

Perennial Plants: Perennials are flowering plants that last longer and keep on flowering. Perennial is a good option for those who do not want to change plants of garden. there is no need of replanting year after year. Penerrials need deep watering. Here are some examples of penerrials: Bleeding heart, Gerberas, Geraniums, Anthuriums.

Creepers and Climbers: Creepers are evergreen trailing plants having thick, glossy leaves and colorful flowers. Most creepers are flowering plants. Climbers are the plants with soft stems that grow only with a support. These plants can be grown along the top of the compound wall or as a cover for walls. Honeysuckle, Russian vine, Sweet Peas and Ivy are some creepers and climbers. Ivy and devils Ivy (money plants) are best option for garden. Money plant can be grown in pots or basket.

Shrubs: Shrubs are woody plants smaller than tree that is less than 15 feet in height. Shrubs can be flowering and ornamental. Flowering shrubs have flowers through out the year. Flowering shrubs can be grown in a shrub border or in a mixed border. They will be mixed with other different plants such as annuals and perennials. Shrubs such as lilacs, viburnum and purple leaf sandcherry can be grown in garden. Here are some examples of flowering shrubs like Ixona, Mosanda, Pentas, Hibiscus, Lantana etc.
Ornamental shrubs do not have flowers but these are best for their evergreen shrubbery, shapes and look. Here is example of some ornamental shrubs like Juniperus, Tuja compacta, Eranthemum, Aralia, Acalypha Hispidia, Crotons etc.

Bulbs: Bulbs are a specific stem structure; they are guaranteed to grow. They need the right amount of moisture and warmth to grow. Here are some examples of bulb like Daffodils, Tulips, Blue bells, lily; tulip etc. bulbs are also seasonal like summer, winter and spring plants. Summer flowering bulbs are Tuberous begonia, calla, Canna lily, Dahlia, gladiolus and lily. Winter and Spring-Flowering Bulbs are Crocus, snowdrop, hyacinth, Daffodil, Tulip, Iris, allium etc.
