Ready Mix Concrete

Ready Mix Concrete, popularly known as RMX refers to a concrete mix in plastic or unhardened state, manufactured especially for construction site. It is freshly mixed concrete, a mixture of Portland cement, water and aggregates consisting of sand and gravel or crushed stone. In traditional construction works, each constituents of concrete mix is mixed in specified proportions at site. Ready mix concrete is becoming popular day by day in construction works. In India only 2 - 5 % of total cement is used in Ready Mix Concrete whereas in other countries like Japan 70% cement is used in Ready Mix Concrete. RMX is bought and sold by volume usually in cubic meters and can be used for various custom-made applications.

How to prepare ready mix concrete?

Ready mix cement concrete is prepared in a factory or batching plant according to required specification. The concrete is mixed under computer-controlled operations according to quality control norms. At mixing site or batching plant ready mix concrete is prepared by mixing Portland cement, water, coarse aggregate comprising gravel or crushed stone and fine aggregate consisting of coarse sand which are procured separately and be mixed in specified proportions.

How to utilize ready mix concrete?

After mixing cement concrete, the mix is carried through trucks mounted with transit mixer on working site and is placed at required component of building/work with the help of sophisticated equipment and methods. Ready mix concrete is preferred to on-site concrete mixing due to non-availability of good raw materials at site, lack of facilities and non-availability of trained technical staff. However, ready mix concrete prepared at sites of longer distances can reduce the flexibility in supply chain and in actual components of the building.

How to prepare concrete mix?

Cement concrete has four primary constituents as raw materials such as water, cement, coarse aggregate (stone ballast or Basra) and fine aggregate (coarse sand). At the time of mixing, the paste formed by water and cement binds fine aggregate and coarse aggregate through a chemical reaction, called hydration and form into a rock-like mass. The coarse aggregate and fine aggregate is well graded; cement is according to specification and the water is free from alkaline and salty material. Add water to cement according to water cement ratio to get maximum strength of concrete mix.

Achieving strength of concrete mix

In construction work, “Cement Concrete” is main and a versatile building material. It can be molded into any shape to achieve great strength. It is ideal for construction work such as building project, roadwork or dam etc. It is perishable in plastic or unhardened state. Raw materials, mixing, transportation, placing and curing can influence its plastic and hardened properties according to advance concrete institute (ACI 121). The strength or quality of cement concrete in construction work depends on the quality and strength of raw materials, transportation, placing and curing. It should be checked constantly during cement concrete work to get qualitative strength constantly. Any committed or omitted slackness in any process of cement concrete reduces the strength of cement concrete.

Benefits of ready mix concrete

  • Can meet the demand of cement concrete mix for wide area.
  • Offers better quality, and consistent mix than site mix concrete
  • Doesn’t require storage space for raw materials at site
  • Reduces noise and dust pollution at site
  • No need to procure/ hire plant and machinery at site of work
  • Time saving as the work is completed before time
  • Does not require hiring labor to mix concrete at site
  • Doesn’t need technical staff employed for production of concrete mix

Drawbacks of ready mix concrete

  • More expensive than site mix concrete due to transportation cost and modern additives which are used to increase time span in traveling.
  • Critical in case of sites at longer distance as the mix takes traveling time from central plant to the site.

Dear Sir,

Thanks, but what is `c/c` in 6 inch.

I understand, 12 mm TMT bars are to be placed lengthwise and breadth wise with spacing of 6 inch on both sides, so I will get a rod mesh (Jalli ) in Square shape. This rod mesh will be placed over shuttering for putting slab.

I hope when u write steel bars, u mean TMT bars only.

Could not respond to u earlier, due to log in problems and I have to create a fresh profile with same user id.

regards,

SCK

Dear Sck
        Use 12mm dia steel bar 6'' c/c and M20 slab 5'' thick.

.Total area of slab is approx 40`(length) x 30 ` (breadth) = 1200 sqft approx covering 2BHK. I can reduce size of TMT bar from 12`` to 10 ``,if desired keeping RCC thickness as 4.5 inch thick with M 20 grade mix.

Dimensions of 2 BHK are as follows:

Total area of slab in sqft

1 DR -                    20
`x 13 ` =  260 sqft

1lobby -                14
`x 14` =   196 sqft

1 BR -                     18`
x 13` =    244 sqft

1 BR-                      10`
x 13`=     130 sqft

1 Kitchen             8` x 6`   =        48
sqft

Balcony               20` x 3` =         60
sqft

                                                         938 sqft

The above dimensions will give u idea on spans. I hope now u can suggest the size of Jalli and thickness of TMT bars , thickness of slab etc

regards

SCK

Dear Sck
The thickness of slab, dia of MS Steel bar and spacing is depend upon the span of the slab, so I already suggest you to plan the construction so that will ultimately give benefit. If the span of slab is up to 10 feet than 4'' slab is sufficient according to design and steel bars of 10mm dia is sufficient. Now without proper plan of the house and design, one can not tell exact thing. In my view to place 12mm steel bars at 4.5 '' is wastage of steel.

Thankx. I will use M20 grade concrete mix and will keep thickness of RCC as 4.5 inch only as 5 inch will add more load over the structure.

I hope Jalli which u suggested as 6 ``x6`` of 12 mm dia TMT bars is a 2 dimensional thing  having length and breadth only;  if height of 6 `` is added, the whole thing will become beam like structure. I intend to place this Jalli in mid of RCC slab of 4.5 `` thickness before pouring M20 grade concrete mix. Is it okay.

The shuttering plates are of various size such as 2'x2' or 3'x1.5' or 2'x1.5' as per availability in your town or city. The mason will tell you about the materiel required.
The spacing of rod 6''x6'' 12 mm dia.

Dear Sir,

What is the standard size of shuttering steel plates for laying roofing. I intend to start shuttering at 9 ft height.

1. How many  steel plates, Pallus and ballies are required for roof size of 1000 sq ft area.

2. What should be size of Jalli - rod mesh (7 inch or 8 inch) and thickness of TMT bars (12 mm or less) for roof of 1st floor

The 9 feet height of wall is right. Door size for room 3'x7' and for toilet 2.5' x7'. Window size taken to be according to room width or 4'x4' etc.

Dear Sir,

Thanks for reply. As per my information, M 20 means 1 (cement) : 1.5 (Badarpur) : 3 (Moti Rori). Beams are already laid and they are crossing each other at 90 degree and are also supported by load bearing walls at different intersections.

Now I intend to build brick walls over the beams leaving spaces for walls and windows. I intend to go up to 9 ft in height for doing shuttering. What can be ideal dimensions for doors and windows and height for walls. Kindly suggest.

regards,

SCK

Dear SCK
If You constructed ground floor wall load bearing than by giving load of beam on load bearing wall than it is OK. M 20 conc means 1;1.5;3 ratio.

Dear Sir,

All the walls are either 4.5 inch or 9 inch thick. Beams for 1st floor are being placed over the roof of ground floor and over the walls. But two beams are on roof but well supported by ground floor walls at a distance of 10 ft . Rest all are firmly on ground floor walls. I intend to use  concrete mix of M 20 grade.

Dear Sck
It not necessary to lay beam on wall for first floor if walls is load bearing in structure. To write a line could not serve the purpose. When one is spending lacs of rupee for construction house but shrinks spending on proper planning, which shall prove costly latter on.I  am in view that you should contact any civil engineer, architect of your town or city and get decision after visiting the site personally.

Hi: I believe the wall on ground floor that you are talking about is 4.5" thick. It would be dangerous to lay a simple 4"x4" beam without support of any roof slab and continue building upon the beam.
Your question certainly lacks details. Without looking at the plans and your actual requirements, it is very difficult to comment upon the situation.
