What care should be taken to protect the dampness from foundations?

TYPE OF FOUNDATION:
  • The foundation of all structures are embedded into the soil. Bricks being porous or brick masonry below ground level can absorb moisture from adjacent ground.
  • This moisture travels up from one course to another by capillary action. It can make the wall damp for a certain height.
  • To prevent water absorbed from the soil rising and causing dampnessinto the wall and adjacent woodwork and plaster, a continuous layer of proofing material is provided.
  • This layer is known as a horizontal damp-proof course.
