What is recommended method for opening in load bearing masonry walls?

The following guidelines are necessary for placing opening in load bearing masonry walls:

• Vertical clear distance between openings should be more than 60cms.
• Horizontal clear distance between openings should be more than 45 cms.
• If the above condition is not satisfied, than the portion of the wall between these openings should be made in plain or reinforced concrete.
• The distance of the openings from the corner should be mores than 45 cms.
• Total width of openings in wall should be less than 50% of length of wall .
• The top of openings in a story should preferably be at the same level so that a continuous lintel may be provided.

If the openings do not comply with the above requirements they shall be strengthened by providing reinforced concrete members around them or reinforcing the brickwork around them.
