| Vertical reinforcement is required in all buildings in seismic zones V and three story (or more) buildings in zone IV also. The critical points where vertical steel bars are required through the masonry are following: |
| All the corners and T junctions of the walls: |
| Embed the corner or wall junction bars in the foundation concrete, keep them vertical by making a tripod of other steel bars or bamboos. |
| Build four to six courses of the masonry making about 100 mm x 100 mm size pocket around each bar. |
| Keep the pockets clean removing the mortar or chips droppings. |
| Fill the pockets with M 15 (1:2:4) cement concrete. |
| Vertical bars will pass through all R.C. bands and floors and get fixed into the roof slab or roof band. |
| Jambs of the doors and windows up to lintel band: |
| Start the jamb bar from the plinth (the top portion of the foundation) band , carry through the masonry pockets as for the corner bars up to the lintel band and fix into the lintel band. |
| Check stability of the slope if the building is on a sloppy site as the slope may slide during rains or earthquake. |
