Get some ideas about structuring roof garden before indulging in it.

How to build roof garden
The first and most important step involved in making terrace garden is to identify the area of terrace where you plan to build a roof garden. Make sure that the roof on which you wish to have garden is strong enough to carry the weight of garden. The roof should not have any leakage of water in roof and it should have effective drainage system. Roof garden can be made on half of terrace leaving a patio to make a sitting place.
Water proofing of roof
Next step is water proofing the roof slab to prevent the seepage in the roof. A proper water proofing treatment should be done before building a roof garden. Chemical based water proofing treatment is more effective than covering based water proofing. After water proofing consult a landscaping expert for roof garden contract. Proper drainage pipes should also be laid over the roof slab. Make sure you have installed a water proof covering with the thermoplastic or rubberized sheeting. Filter sheet is also necessary to drain off the moisture form the roof slab.
Soil for roof garden
The top layer of the roof garden is soil it can be a mix of soil and manure. The top layer of roof garden should be light weight and layer can be 6 to 9 inches deep. After laying the soil it s time choose plants and grass for roof garden.
Plants for roof garden
Prefer fiber rooted plants instead of deep rooted plants for roof garden otherwise there is danger of the structural damage to the building. Plants with deep roots can be planted in big planters. Various designs of planter can enhance the beauty of roof garden. Before planting the flowers and plants it is necessary to keep in mind that hard plants should be planted in sunny side and plants require less sunlight should be planted in non-sunny side. Vegetables and shrubs can also be grow in roof garden, consult landscaping consultant to know which one is best for your roof garden. Heavy shrubs and vegetables with deep roots can harm building structure. Also prefer plants which have less requirement of water.
Roof garden is possible in a home, multi story building and commercial building terrace also. So, build a roof garden to make roof more inviting and beautiful.

For roof garden, you should ensure that the house roof is damp proof. After that contact a skilled person who have enough experience of roof garden. Before hiring the person check his previous projects. And please ensure that there is no leakage in the roof.
