How to Grow Bamboo Indoor | | | | Bamboo is a beautiful and an eco-friendly plant that can be grown in homes. It grows in tropics where there is warm weather and regular rainfall. It’s easy to grow and take care of bamboos in dim natural lights. Dwarf bamboo plants are suitable for the décor of home. They can be grown in containers having water and little soil. Lucky green or ribbon bamboo plant, curly stems and flexible strap shaped leaves displayed in vases of water makes an appealing look in homes. Bamboo plant has been regarded as a sign of good fortune in Asian cultures. According to Feng Shui, it is considered that bamboo plant brings health, happiness, good fortune and prosperity in homes. It is considered mystically that lucky bamboo plant creates space, energy and safety for house owners. This article gives you some tips for growing bamboo plants in your home.
Buy healthy bamboo stemsHealthy bamboo stems in form of cuttings with rich shade of green should be purchased. Do not buy yellow or dark green bamboo stems that have rotten in water. Excess growth can be cut off with sharp knife.
Choose transparent containers of proper sizeThe container/pot for growing bamboo plants should be either transparent of decorative glass or a jar container/ pottery container in which roots can be seen. The size and shape of container should be according to the availability of space and size of bamboo stems.
Plant bamboo stem in container full of water and pebblesFor proper growth and support of bamboo stems, place glass marbles/pebbles or marble chips into container and have a creative design for your drawing room. Fill up container with fresh water and insert bamboo stems into it. Ensure that bamboo stems are submerged at least 2 to 3 inches in water. For rich growth of bamboo, its roots should be submerged in water constantly. For maintaining water level, refill the container with water.
Water bamboo plant regularlyThe roots of bamboo plants should not be dry at anytime. The quantity of water depends on the height of cutting. For cuttings from 4 to 8 inches in height, water level should be from 1 to 2 inches high and for longer stalks water level should be from 2 to 4 inches high. The water of container should be changed within 10 to 15 days. Clean water, water from aquarium or filtered water is best suited for proper growth of bamboo plants. Salty water or chlorine water can change the color of bamboo leaves into yellow or brown. Roots of bamboo plants should be kept loose instead of tying them tightly.
Don’t keep plants in direct sunlightBamboo plants should not be placed in direct sunlight. Filtered sunlight is best suited for good growth of them. Keep constant watch on bamboo plants and if you find that the plant starts to wilt, place it in much light. Also ensure that water level must be high.
Trim new buds for growing new stemsOccasional fog helps for the growth of new buds on stem of bamboo plant. New buds generally tend to come outside from the stem. For obtaining new stem, trim new buds and put them in water near roots.
Wash containers and pebbles periodicallyThe containers of bamboo plants should be cleaned after 40 to 50 day interval. First of all remove bamboo stem/stalks carefully and clean it with cool water. Then wash container with detergent and rinse it well. Also wash glass marbles or pebbles or marble chips before putting them back into container. Fill up container with fresh water and insert bamboo stems into the container.
Grow bamboos in loose and soil of sand particlesIf you want to grow bamboo plants in soil, the soil should be loose containing some sand particles. Make proper arrangement for drainage excess water put into bamboo plant. Even though bamboo plant grows in water but if it is planted into the soil with inadequate drainage, it may get rot root. When upper layer of soil becomes dry, put water into bamboo plant.
Keep proper room temperature for bamboo plantsFor good growth and survival of bamboo plants, room temperature should be between 15 to 25 degrees centigrade at all times. Excess heat or cold may damage plants.
Utilize fertilizers for good growth of plantsFor rich growth of bamboo plants, use fertilizer mixed with water after 20 to 30-day-interval. In case of non availability of fertilizer you can use manure used for other plants. Avoid over fertilizing for excess growth of plants. Never plant bamboo in garden because it attracts insects. Bamboos should be planted inside the house.
Note: Bamboo plants should not be placed within the reach of house pets since these plants are toxic and harmful for house pets.
