Setting up the Road in Straight Alignment

Four basic steps to set up the road are following.

BASIC STEP
FIXING SIGHT RAILS
TRAVELLER AND ITS USAGE
FORMATION AND CHECKING OF ROAD CAMBER (Curve)

BASIC STEP:

Before taking up the road work, spot levels of the ground where the proposed road is to be aligned should be recorded.

FIXING SIGHT RAILS:

Drive wooden pegs along the centre line of the proposed road at every 15 meters distance.
Erect sight rails at 1.00 meter away from the edge of the road.
Construct brick pillars at the foot of the sight rails on which the reduce level (R.L) of the proposed road at that particular point is noted.
The height of the top of sight rail is adjusted to the desired height before the sight rail is fixed in position.

TRAVELLER AND ITS USAGE:

The depth of excavation can be checked with the help of the traveler.
The sight rail cannot be fixed where the two or more roads meet.
In such cases one can use of the boning rods, maintain and check the excavation levels.

FORMATION AND CHECKING OF THE ROAD CAMBER (Curve):The road cambering (curving) can be done at two separate levels which are following.

One level at the crown.
Other level at the edge of road.
Check up the above levels, the two following methods are used.
Two sight rail and single traveler method.
Two traveler method.
