Tips for Aluminum Paint

Aluminum paint is significant for its capacity to resist the rust. It is applicable on metal and wood finishes has light weight. It is resistant to moisture, weather, rust, spray oil and grease. It should be stirred frequently during the use.

According to Indian standard Aluminum paint should be (confirming to IS: 2339) of approved brand and manufacture. The paint comes in compact dual container with paste and be mixed separately. The two should be mixed together for proper consistency before use.

Guidelines for Surface Preparation

1.Preparation of New Surface

  • All rust and scales should be removed by scraping or brushing with steel brushes.
  • The surfaces should be made smooth with sand paper.
  • The surface should be cleaned by cloth and all dust should be removed carefully.

  • Rusty patches should completely be cleaned and touched with ready made paint of red lead.
  • If the old paint is swelled and flaked, it should be removed completely.

Painting Procedure

After preparation of the surface as per guidelines given above, the painting work should be started applying the number of coats as required.

  • Each coat should be allowed to dry for 24 hours and be lightly rubbed down with fine grade sand paper and dusted off before the next coat is applied.
  • The finished surface should present an even uniform appearance.
  • Care should be taken to frequently stir the paint during use as aluminum paint is likely to settle in the container.

  •  All grease marks should be removed and the surface should be washed and dried.
  •  If old paint is firm and sound, it should be cleaned of grease, smoke etc.
  •  The surface should be rubbed with sand paper.
  •  Rusty patches should be completely cleaned and touched with red lead.
  •  If old paint is swelled, it should be removed completely.

Precautions during Painting

  • Floor should be cleaned before starting painting work so that the dust should not come on painting surface.
  • A brush which paint has been dried up is spoiled and should on no account be used for painting work.
  • The container used should be cleaned, washed and dried before putting the paint for painting work.
  • Each coat of paint should be dried.
  • Each coat should be rubbed down lightly with fine grade sand paper and dusted off before the next coat is applied.
  • Paint should be stirred frequently during the use. It should be applied quickly.
  • No leftover paint should be put back into stock tins. When not in use, the container should be properly closed.

Hello, Chitra Tibrewal
Oil based paint is used to paint the steel surfaces.
If you want to paint them yourself then try some tips to paint a steel surface:
1.    The first step should be – clean the surface. You can choose brush, spray or roller to paint.
2.    If you want to apply more than one coat then let the each layer will dry before applying the next.
3.    To coat cracks- powder coat is the better option.
4.    Mix the chemicals according to manufacturers instructions.
5.    Also need to wear chemical resistant gloves and face/eye protections also required.
6.    Always paint in dust-free environment.
7.    If possible try to varnish your metal.
