Tips for Aluminum Paint | | | | Aluminum paint is significant for its capacity to resist the rust. It is applicable on metal and wood finishes has light weight. It is resistant to moisture, weather, rust, spray oil and grease. It should be stirred frequently during the use.
According to Indian standard Aluminum paint should be (confirming to IS: 2339) of approved brand and manufacture. The paint comes in compact dual container with paste and be mixed separately. The two should be mixed together for proper consistency before use.
Guidelines for Surface Preparation
1.Preparation of New Surface
- All rust and scales should be removed by scraping or brushing with steel brushes.
- The surfaces should be made smooth with sand paper.
- The surface should be cleaned by cloth and all dust should be removed carefully.
- Rust patches should be cleaned completely with coarse emery paper and brush.
- All grease marks should be removed and the surface should be washed and dried.
- The rusted surface should be touched with ready made paint of red lead.
2. Preparation of Old Surface
- If the old paint is firm and sound, it should be cleaned of grease, smoke etc.
- The surface should be rubbed with sand paper and dusted off.
- Rusty patches should completely be cleaned and touched with ready made paint of red lead.
- If the old paint is swelled and flaked, it should be removed completely.
Painting Procedure
After preparation of the surface as per guidelines given above, the painting work should be started applying the number of coats as required.
- Each coat should be allowed to dry for 24 hours and be lightly rubbed down with fine grade sand paper and dusted off before the next coat is applied.
- The finished surface should present an even uniform appearance.
- Care should be taken to frequently stir the paint during use as aluminum paint is likely to settle in the container.
- The paint should be applied and laid off quickly on surface otherwise it would not easily finish.
- If required spraying should be done with spray machine of high pressure type or allow pressure type depending on the nature and location of the work.
- Skilled and experienced workman/ painter should be employed for the work. Care should be taken that no hair marks from brush or clogging of paint puddles in the corners of panels, angles of molding remain on surface.
- All rust and scales on the surfaces should be removed by scraping or brushing using steel brushes.

- Before painting, the rust patches should be cleaned with coarse emery paper and brush completely.
- All grease marks should be removed and the surface should be washed and dried.

- Rusty patches should be completely cleaned and touched with red lead.
- If old paint is swelled, it should be removed completely.
Precautions during Painting
- Floor should be cleaned before starting painting work so that the dust should not come on painting surface.
- A brush which paint has been dried up is spoiled and should on no account be used for painting work.
- The container used should be cleaned, washed and dried before putting the paint for painting work.
- Each coat of paint should be dried.
- Each coat should be rubbed down lightly with fine grade sand paper and dusted off before the next coat is applied.
- Paint should be stirred frequently during the use. It should be applied quickly.
- No leftover paint should be put back into stock tins. When not in use, the container should be properly closed.
- Special care should be taken while painting over bolts, nuts, and rivets and over lap etc. in case of steel work painting.

- The paint is applicable for metal and wood finishes.
- It produces a beautiful, glossy, metallic finish of good quality and durability.
- It’s excellent resistant to moisture, weather, rust, salt spray, oil and grease.
- It can be applied on exterior or interior wood and metal.
- It can be applied by brush, roller, conventional sprayer or airless sprayer to large areas without brush marks.
Disadvantages of Aluminum Paint
- It can not be applied during the low temperatures.
- It takes more time in drying up.
