| | Materials commonly used for painting of exterior plastered surface: | | | Materials: Paints that are generally used for painting exterior surfaces of buildings are classified into the following category: | | Cement paints | Acrylic emulsion paints (exterior use) | Special paints and finishes | | CEMENT PAINT : | | They contain white or colored Portland cement (Portland cements can provide adequate levels of strength and durability, are the most popular cements used today) with certain additives, such as, lime, pigments, hygroscopic salts, water repellants, fungicides etc. | Cement paint readily mixes with water and is used on porous surfaces like masonry (stonework, brickwork etc), concrete and plaster except gypsum plaster (Plaster of Paris). | For exteriors, cement paints are commonly used as they are quite economical and have comparatively better performance than distempers for outdoor protection and decoration of buildings. | Cement paints are recommended where the surface is wet at the time of painting or is likely to become wet later. | They however have limited life and are suitable in areas where monsoon is not too heavy. Its resistance to fungus and algae is quite low. | Covering capacity of the cement paint for two-coat brushwork on plastered surface is about 2.2-3.2 sqm / kg. | | ACRYLIC EXTERIOR PAINTS : | | In terms of performance, durability, costs and appeal, they are significantly ahead of cement paints and textured finishes | They provide excellent protection against the natural disasters by resisting extremes of heat, cold and rain. | It contains special additives, which provide good protection against UV rays. | They are also extremely resistance to fungus, algae, peeling and fading, staying bright and effective for 5-6 years. | Covering capacity of the paint varies with the type of surface and make of the paint but it is generally about 5.5-6.0 sq m /liter in two coats. | | SPECIAL FINISHES : | | These finishes provide a touch of quality to walls. | They offer good protection against fungus and algae and remain as such effective for 3-4 years. | These are a vast improvement over cement paints, in terms of resisting the elements. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
