The following raw materials are recommended for iron roofing.
1. Galvanized iron sheets
2. Hook
3. Bolts
4. Bitumen and steel washers
5. Nuts
6. Frame / purlins
7. Ridge and hip cap
8. Metal valleys
Corrugated Iron Sheet:
This material consists of sheets of hot-dip galvanized mild steel. The corrugations increase bending strength of the sheet in the direction parallel to corrugations but not across them.
Normally each sheet is manufactured longest in its strong direction. These sheets are nailed up to the top edges of trusses or rafters to tie the roof and support the roofing material together.
Hooks...........
Bolts and Nuts:
Bolts and nuts are Zinc plated, cross head, complete with square nut.
Steel Washers:
A flat disk made of metal, plastic, rubber, or of leather is placed beneath the nut or joint to relieve friction to prevent leakage or distribute pressure.
Frames/ Purlins:
Horizontal and hat structural member that span between the two red-iron frames making unity of the frames provide support for the roof decking.
Ridge and Hip Cap
Cap shingles for ridges and hips may be cut from standard shingles. If over lapped part is cut on a slight taper, it will give good looking appearance.
The exposure to hip and ridge cap should be equal to or less than the exposure in the field of roof. The caps of ridge and hip are installed with same exposure to the shingles.
Metal Valleys
Roof leaks in a valley can be prevented. If the metal flashing has been used, the most common problem is that the shingles are cut improperly.
Gravity with the cuts in tips of shingles works to prevent water from leaking during rainstorm. On the most roofs, metal valley flashing is installed after the roofing felt liner.
