What preparations for base are recommended for terrazzo tiles flooring?
Preparation for base:- It is one of the most important steps to satisfy the tile installation. Sub flooring should be good in structure, solid, smooth, flat and free of oily or waxy layers.
These are the steps to be followed while preparing for the base:
- Measure the size of the floor on which you have to lay the tiles. You can use chalk-line to measure the level of the floor.
- Use flat side of the trowel to spread one coat of thin set of base concrete or RCC (Reinforced, unbreakable, cement concrete) slab on which the tiles are to be laid and then apply another coat using rough side of trowel.
- Base concrete should be cleaned, wet and wiped.
- Place the tiles one at a time in the thin set by twisting, pressing and allowing proper space for the grout (a powder mixed with water that dries quickly).
- Apply grout to the tiles to hold the tiles together in place. When you choose your grout, it is better to get a grout of darker color that will make stains less visible. Begin by spreading grout over a tiled area, and use the edge of a trowel to push the grout into the joints of tiles. Make sure to put grout into all grout lines.
Tools for Terrazzo Flooring--WOODEN MALLET:- Usually used to knock wooden pieces together, or to drive chisels into stone.
Standard size of tiles in terrazzo tile flooring
Tolerance on length and breadth of Terrazzo tiles should be above or below one mm
Terrazzo flooring (marble chips flooring) should be 40mm thick into panels of size 1.2m x 1.2m, rubbed and polished to granular finish
Raw materials recommended for terrazzo tile flooring--Terrazzo tiles ,Cement, Lime Putty
The quantity of cement should be around 4.4 Kg
If any tile is not in perfect square shape, it will spoil the entire flooring.
Make sure that the floor to be tiled is solid, hard and leveled.
Where the use of machine for grinding is not executable as in lavatories, skirting etc., rubbing and polishing should be done by hand.
Base concrete on which the tiles are to be laid should be cleaned, wet and wiped.
The finished floor should not sound hollow when tapped with a wooden hammer
The floor gets harder when it is kept wet
