Independent Beam vs integrated beam in roof slab

I will be building house. contractor showed me other constructions where beam is integrated in roof slab itself. say for slab of 4.5 inch , remaining 4.5 inch of 9inch beam shows on upper side. I guess this is possible to have to lower side also?Question : What is advantage / disadvantage of these integrated beams?.
