How to Install Kitchen Sink?

Kitchen sink is very useful appliance since it’s used for disposal of wastages into sewerage system. To have more benefits, you can increase sink utility by installing a unit suited to your needs, for example replace single bowl unit with double bowl unit or install a modern decorator sink. Sink appliances consist of sink/bowl, C.I. brackets, union, drainage board and G.I. or P.V.C. waste pipes. This article tells you steps for installation of kitchen sink.

Step 1: Mark location and make grooves in wall

The location of sink should be marked accurately with the help of pencil. Make chase in wall by chiseling for top edge of the sink and make grooves under countertop slab with jigsaw blade carefully for top edge of the sink as well.

Step 2: Make holes in wall for fixing brackets

Make 2 holes in wall adjacent to bottom surface of the sink for fixing brackets. These holes should be 300 mm on either side from the centre of sink in 750 mm long sink and 225 mm in case of 600 mm long sink. C.I. cantilever brackets should be embedded into cement concrete in ratio 1:2:4 block of size 100 x 75 x 150 mm. Both brackets should be in one level and line. C.I. cantilever brackets should be embedded before dado/ wall tiles work is done. Insert the sink into hole in counter top to test the fitness of sink. After testing the fitting, remove sink and adjust hole if necessary.

Step 3: Fix the sink at proper level

The top of kitchen sink should be at 80 to 82 cm height from floor level of kitchen. The tape below sink should be at 40 cm high from floor level of kitchen.

Step 4: Place the sink at right space

Measure the space left in counter top for sink and place the sink to the correct size according to existing hole. Place the sink in space left in counter top from upper side and keep the top of sink 2 cm or equal to the thickness of stone used in counter top below top level of countertop.

Step 5: Keep the sink parallel to countertop

Make sure that the sink is parallel to countertop and is placed in a way as not to disturb underlying cabinet.

Step 6: Install the sink properly

Fit C. P. brass or P.V. C union in sink drainage hole as per manufacturers’ instructions with white lead and thread. Ensure that the fitting is tight without having any leakage. C. P. brass or P.V. C. union should be connected to 40 mm G. I. or P. V. C waste pipe, which are bent towards wall and discharge into floor trap.

Step 7: Apply sealant in chase and groove

Apply either sealant or white cement paste in chase and grove portion for fixing the sink. Insert sink into the hole immediately after application of sealant or white cement paste before it becomes hard. Fix the sink carefully and press it down in the sealant. Remove extra sealant or white cement paste carefully.

Step 8: Do proper cleaning and apply wax polish

Clean the sink, pipes and countertop with clean cloth leaving no marks on sink and countertop. Apply wax polish on them.

Step 9: Place drain board carefully

One end of drain board should rest on the sink and other end should be supported on C.I. brackets embedded into cement concrete 1:2:4 block of size 100x75x150mm. Drain board should be placed in such a way that water must drain into the sink directly. Ensure that after installation the sink will not disturb existing cabinets and supports of countertop.

Step 10: Install Faucet

To install faucet, set the sink upside down on countertop. Fix faucet’s supply tube and tail piece through gasket which seals the faucet with the sink. Tighten the nuts and washers to the underside of the sink deck. Before tightening the nuts, ensure the faucet can swing in full and fix a bead of silicone caulk around entire perimeter of the underside of sink to create a watertight seal between sink and countertop.

Yes, it is a good idea to utilize space under the sink. In a small kitchen, it is usable to install a barrier free multi container system. Thanks for this idea.

The space below the sink is mostly reseved for waste-container.
Specially for handicaped and elderly people it is possible to implement a barriere-free usable muli-container-system.
