Architectural Shingles

Laminate shingles are developed by attaching two shingles, which make them stronger than a single shingle. They are also termed as architectural shingles, and are used to replace wood tiles, as they look like wood.

They are single, double and triple layered, and when used by interlocking two pieces, they become stronger against heavy winds. The making involves, asphalt which is laid over the paper matting with some addition of granules for producing colors.

Advantages of Architectural Shingles:

  • Laminated shingles have low cost.
  • They are resistant to insects, or rot.
  • Triple laminate shingles are stronger than single and double shingles.
  • They are stronger than wood shingles, or slate roofing.
  • They can be developed to give a look like wood, or slate, giving an expensive look at low cost.
  • Laminate shingles can be used with fiberglass to create reinforcement.

Disadvantages of Architectural Shingles:

  • Weak laminate shingles can tear in a severe weather.
  • They are heavier than strip shingles, so deep nailing is required for a durable construction.
  • Their color fades away due to weather conditions.
  • Their life span decreases if they are low in quality.
  • You cannot place laminate shingles over old shingles, so extra work is required to demolish an old material.
