Rubber Roofing- Eco Friendly Option

Various needs of construction motivated the manufacturers to develop rubber roofing, and one of those needs were to create a lightweight material. There are different types including cedar, rubber roof shingles, and slate rubber roof tiles. Traditionally they were used to replace asphalt shingles on a flat roof.

Rubber roofing material is available in rolls having a maximum width of 50 feet, so it can cover a flat roof easily. Where there are seams, they are filled with adhesives, tapes, or liquid rubber.

Advantages:

  • Eighty percent of rubber tiles are made by recycling various materials as, PVC, rubber tires, stone dust, sawdust, or plastic bags. So, they are much cheaper than other roofing materials.
  • Due to lightweight, rubber roofing cannot harm the building structure.
  • They are very durable, and are fire resistant.
  • Insects cannot harm rubber tiles.
  • They have a natural quality to resist water, so when laid over roof they can protect the building from water penetration.
  • They act as insulation for a home thus reducing the HVAC costs.
  • Some manufacturers claim that rubber tiles can last up to 50 years.

Disadvantages:

  • Installation of rubber roofing material on a flat roof requires experts, as an ordinary person cannot handle it.
  • Great care is required regarding the seams around chimneys, HVAC units, or stacklines, as they will last longer only if the filling is done properly.
  • Leakage may occur after some years, if rubber roofs are installed by using the same adhesive as being used for fiberglass, or asphalt roofs.

Types: They include, 45 mil ballasted EPDM rubber, 45 mil mechanically attached roof, 45 mil adhered roof, 60 mil ballasted EPDM rubber, 60 mil adhered roof, 60 mil mechanically attached roof, 80 mil roofs both adhered, and mechanically attached.

Colors: Rubber roofing is available in black, white, slate gray, pastels, and cedar.

Cost:  It depends on the quality of the material and installation, which is divided as basic, better and best. The total cost is calculated by adding both material and installation cost. So the rough estimate of total average cost for basic type of rubber roof is $2.08 per sq. ft, whereas for better type its $2.59 per sq.ft and for best quality its $3.16 per sq.ft. But, the prices are different in different countries.

Installation plus Tools: The board to which it is bonded should be very even and smooth; besides fasteners should be flush driven. When you see an uneven surface then first install a thin sheet of plywood or fiberboard. Rollers are used to apply cement to the sheet and the board, half of the sheet is folded in roll formand the other half is installed. First sometime is given to adhesive to dry off then two layers are bonded, there by remove wrinkles if any.

Lifespan: Lifespan of rubber roof varies according to the environment, the load over it, moisture, and quality of the construction. Experts have researched about the lifespan, which is different for different types as below:

  • 45 Mil Ballasted EPDM Rubber properly installed that drains well, is 12 years.
  • 45 Mil Mechanically Attached roof properly installed that drains well, is 12 years.
  • 45 Mil Adhered roof properly installed that drains well, is 12+ years.
  • 60 Mil Ballasted EPDM Rubber properly installed that drains well is 12+ years.
  • 60 Mil Mechanically Attached roof properly installed that drains well is 15 years.
  • 60 Mil Adhered roof properly installed that drains well is 15+ years.
  • 80+ Mil Mechanically Attached roof properly installed that drains well is 20+ years.
  • 80+ Mil Adhered roof properly installed that drains well is 20+ years.
  • 80+ Mil Fleece back Adhered roof properly installed that drains well is 25+ years.
