Generally, the brick pillars are constructed in the Veranda, the single storey building and where architectural views with brick face are required. Normal size of brick pillars are 9” X 9”, 9” X 13 1/2”, 13 1/2” X13 1/2” and 13 1/2” X 18”.

The size of pillar i.e. Length and breadth is designed on the basis of load bearing on it. While designing the pillar the following points should be kept in mind:

a)      Load bearing by the pillar i.e. Dead load & live load.

b)      Crushing strength of bricks.

c)      Allowable compressive stress in brick work.

d)      Effective height of the pillar.

e)      Slenderness ratio of the pillar.
