|  Topic: Constructing a flat on a terrace
First and the foremost, this is a wonderful website. It has already helped me a lot. We are about to purchase an open terrace on the second floor of a building about 1100 sq. ft. We plan to construct an apartment. Now I wish to have RCC roof(slab), but many have recommended sheets (asbestos or any light material) so as to reduce weight. But I am worried about security and leakages with asbestos sheets. Also since the building has offices, constructing a slab later will be tedious. Now, how do we decide if the building will bear the slab? The building is 15 years old.

Hello..! Sumedha, The construction of upper floors ,depends upon the plan and structural design of the building ..so to avoid risk ... Kindly take help of a Local qualified Structural Engineer/ Architect ,who can visit your site easily....regards.. | | |

Contact civil or structural engineer as stated by Sh Jharia and Jai Parkash who will check the foundation of building and see the position of further loading on walls.

Join date: Jul 2014 | Thank you Mr. Jharia, Mr. Jaiprakash and Mr. Gupta for your response. We met up with a Civil Eng., an architect and a civil contractor. As per their suggestions, we have cancelled RCC roof as the building may not be able to bear it. We are looking at sheet roofing with false ceiling. Will that be okay since we have very heavy rainfall?
