|  Topic: Roof design for vegetable garden
I have my own 2 storey house (ground + 1st floor + terrace which has mangalore tile roofing). This house was constructed in 2004 on a 60 x 40 ft. site.
Part of the terrace I had made a hall by having the top covered by mangalore tile roofing. That is around 600 sq. ft total. Now I want to remove the mangalore tile roofing and replace it by some roofing on which I can grow a vegetable garden.
One option is to put a concrete slab. (The concrete columns used for constructing the house go all the way to the mangalore tile roofing). However, I calculated that a 6" thick slab would come to around 32kg/ sq. ft, whereas the soil for vegetable garden (assuming 10" thick and a maximum wet soil density of 2000kg/cu.m) is around 45 kg/sq. ft. Together this is quite a weight on the building, and I am not sure if the building can take it. (19 tons + 27 tons to be precise)
I am wondering if there is an option to the concrete roofing, which is more light weight and can take the weight of the soild above. Any answer will be much appreciated.
