Kitchen lighting, tips and tricks

Lighting has a strong impact on the mood of a person and when it  comes to kitchen lighting it becomes even more important as the food then impacts the mood of the whole family. So you should start planning the lights as soon as you complete your architectural design to get the best results.

Mix indirect lights with direct lights
Mixing indirect lights with direct lights can dramatically change the look of your kitchen. The indirect light is created by hiding the light source and it comes after getting bounced from the ceiling or wall. You can hide the lights in a ceiling design or below the cabinets or in the cabinets.

Direct lights are bright compared to indirect lights and can be used for the work area or the general purpose lighting solution.

Watch the Cabinets and Drawers
While planning the lights make sure you take into account the position of the cabinets and drawers. You will need ample lights to see the contents of these and a lot of time this detail gets skipped out and the cabinets doors themselves block the light from getting into the cabinets.

You can also try fixing light fixtures in the cabinets as you can see in the image below.

Count the doors and windows
Lights coming through the window and door also plays a huge role but remember that the lights from these would only come in during the day so unless you plan to skip the evening meals you will have to work on both the day lighting and night lighting schemes.

Dimmers and Separate switches.
Dimmers can add to the appeal of your kitchen so try implementing one for the area and if you have separate wiring and switches for your lighting arrangements then you can save some money as you won't have to switch all of them collectively.

Dining Area
Your family is going to spend a lot of time in the kitchen so its essential that the kitchen is beautiful, functional and comfortable. Downlights or chandelier could be used for lighting a dining area. Usually the dining tables  are small in size so a chandelier would work but if you have a bigger table, something like used in a buffet then you can also use recessed fixtures on top of your table.

The general theme and the dominant design elements of your kitchen play an important part, do you have heavy wooden cabinets or does your kitchen has a strong steel presence, it will all affect how the kitchen would finally come out so keep an eye on the various options out there before taking the plunge.
