Topic: Brick Advice Urgent

HI Guys... i searched around the internet and did not find a proper answer so posting it here.

Im gonna start the wall construction for my house soon and am confused in which bricks to order. I have a choice of, normal burnt bricks, Laterite bricks and Cement Blocks.

Norma burnt bricks or clay bricks is not cost effective i heard so im gonna stick to the other 2 options cement blocks and Laterite Bricks.

Some say cement blocks are cost effective but in the long run the quality decreases. Laterite bricks are strong and less expensive than clay bricks but they say it consumes more cement for plastering compared to cement blocks.

Need some expert advice on Cement blocks Vs Laterite Bricks. Advantages and disadvantages.. Pls..

Thanks in Advance..

Dear Pmarple

Laterite  bricks or blocks are made from laterite stone generally found in southern part of  India. It is soft when wet but on exposure to air it gradually hardens as the moisture between the flat clay particles evaporates and the larger iron salt lock in to rigid laterite structure and become resistant to atmospheric conditions. Nearly all laterites are rusty-red because of iron oxides.

In my view, As stated by you that brunt bricks are not cost effective. Use FIRST CLASS BRUNT BRICKS which have crushing strength more than 105 kg per cm sq and observe water more than 10% after emersion in water for 24 hours. Brunt bricks if laid with proper bond, joint at corner and have good bond with plaster are better than other. The concrete block is cost effective, not give good bond at joints and have no good finish with plaster. The laterite bricks also have same problem and plaster may be weak after some time. Brunt bricks also space saving.

Thanks Mr Gupta.. it was really helpful.

As i mentioned due to budget and time constraints I cannot go for burnt bricks. I am left with the choice of Cement blocks or Laterite bricks which are both easily available in my locality.  So please help me choose between cement block and laterite brick. All i ned to know is which among the 2 is more durable and gives long life.

And as you rightly said the plastering might become weak after some time. Is there any solution for this issue..??

And one more question. for wooden window frames what suits better .. wood polish or paint?

Thanks for the great advice again.

Dear Pmarple

Use cement concrete block, for windows frame use hard wood as cost saving or use iron window frame. Painting have more life than polish. polish surface become weak on rain water, sun, heat and cold.
