Topic: What precautions should be taken while constructing leakproof Slab

Hi,

I am going to start construction of Ground floor slab. As per diagram provided by my architect, I have Master Bedroom on first floor with attached toilet-bathroom in it. And exactly below that on ground floor I have kitchen. I heard by some of my friends that the after 7-10 years down the line, water leakage starts from slab area in toilet-bathroom. My concern is that this will cause water getting ripped in kitchen area after 7-10 years.

As the slab is yet to be constructed, I have 2-3 weeks of time, what precautions need to be taken in slab area corresponsing to toilet-bathroom on first floor, so that water will not get leaked into kitchen which is lying exactly below it on ground floor. Do I need to use any special precautions and any special material in contruction of slab for this?

Regards,

Prashant

Dear Parshant

Every slab should be leakproof not only for bathroom. Precaution should be taken that at the time of laying slab.

It is generally seen that mason and laborer walks on the newly laid cement concrete slab.

The contractor did not bother to finish the top surface of the slab by saying that I will do the shullary on the next day. But if after using the vibrator the slab surface should be finished first with wooden float after that the surface should be finished with iron float and no body is allowed to come after finishing at least for 4 hours than there is no question of leakage. The joints should be finished well.

Dear Parshant,
Mr.S.L.Gupta might have helped you a bit by providing information about the precautions to be taken while laying your slab. Apart from the above precautions you can also avail the various water proofing coatings available in the market. For example Brushbond RFX from Fosroc, Boscolastic coating from Bostik. These coatings are to be applied to the slab surface before laying the tiles in your bathroom. You can approach the local applicators available in your city.

Dear prashant,

I feel Vastu suggests a bed room in SW while the Kitchen in SE or NW corner; that apart wash platform (MORI) if  attached to kitchen on GF may be placed below Bathroom on FF. An integral sunken slab sloping towrds outer wall in the bathroom at the 1st floor may also help.

I too am facing leakage problem from FF after 8-10 years, making me lose faith in contractors. People suggest another slab as SF, which raises the question of  how many more? Wishing you the best of luck. Regards
