Installation Precautions for Wooden Flooring

Precautions before Installation
Before you install a new hardwood floor, plaster work must be complete well. Painting on the walls should be finished at least 24 hours prior to installation so that the finish might dry completely before the installation begins. Remove all items from cabinets, bookcases, closets and similar containers. Replace all the breaking objects such as lamps, vases, mirrors, wall hangings, antiques or other valuables from the area affected by installation. Disconnect and remove all electronic equipments including televisions, stereos and computers. Remove all electrical wires running under carpets and door cases. Move all articles of the furniture out of the room in which the flooring is to be installed.

Moisture Test before Installation
It's compulsory to test “Moisture Level” of the installation site since it varies place to place. Low moisture level indicates that installation may be done. But high moisture level indicates that the moisture barrier should be installed or the flooring materials should be stored for at least three days (72 hours) to adjust the site conditions thoroughly. High moisture level reflects that wooden floors should not be installed under any circumstance. In such cases flooring professionals will suggest suitable flooring material for your environment.

Moisture Levels are measured twice:
  • When installation site is initially measured and inspected.
  • Before installation of new floor begins.

Precautions after Installation
You should maintain newly installed floor carefully. Before using new floor, remove all installation debris. An unfinished wooden floor is sanded, stained and finally sealed with one or more coats of finish. The floor must be left to dry overnight each time the finishing coat is applied. Wait for 24 hours after applying the last coat of finish. Change air filters after new wooden floor has been installed. Put appropriate protectors on the feet of chairs, tables and other articles of furniture to avoid the damage on the floor.

Move the furniture and other things back into the room carefully. Place rugs on the paths of high-traffic. Do not put dirty or muddy shoes on the floor. Do not use sharp objects like wheels, high heels or silverwares on the floor. Keep color liquids or markers away from the floor. Remove dust and spots regularly to enhance the beauty and life of wooden floors.
